The problem is that Blizzard didn’t address any of this at the actual show that hundreds of thousands of people were watching. Not “personally attack developers” mad, as that’s never justified, but very, very mad. In that case, I would understand the anger dial being turned up to 11, because yeah, if I thought Diablo Immortal was replacing D4, I’d be pretty mad too.
Much of the anger was rooted not necessarily in the existence of the mobile game, but many, many people sincerely believed that this mobile game was replacing Diablo 4, that this was the next evolution of the series into something no one had asked for.
Tons and tons of the fans I talked to had no idea that Blizzard had already addressed this before the show. The implication there was that Diablo 4, the game everyone clearly wants to see, would not be announced at BlizzCon the way many predicted it would be, given that it’s now been six years since Diablo 3 came out, and Blizzard was making it clear they were going to talk about Diablo extensively at the show for the first time in a while.īut both I and Blizzard were sort of in a bubble assuming everyone had gotten that message.
